An artistic residency for Contorno Urbano: a participatory design process built to create a network, and some awareness, between the shops around Plaza de la Libertad.
What came out of it is a series of portable shelves whose job is to bring more green space into the plaza. The whole thing grew out of conversations with the owners of those shops.
02 The work
A participatory design process, making moveable structures that bring green space into Plaza de la Libertad, and connection between the people who work around it.
Nine shelves, built flat so they can be folded down, carried, and opened again wherever they are needed.
03 Process
A month of co-design with the shop owners. They don’t know much about design or fabrication, and they only speak Spanish, so the month went like this: bring an idea, come back with the feedback, bring it again. The feedback never arrived from a designer’s point of view. It arrived from a normal citizen’s.

Then an intense week of carpentry, thanks to the wood lab of Contorno Urbano, based in their communal garden. A warm and generous place to work.
The build was made much easier by working with jigs, so the same pieces came out the same way every time. Nine shelves in total.
