Edicola Sal’8

A collective action in the Fossolo neighbourhood, Bologna. Where a newsstand once stood, a table with four chairs was installed. Designed as a tribute to newspaper culture and built entirely from waste found in the neighbourhood.

This practice was never meant to be violent or vandalistic, but just an act carried out by friends to create spaces of community in a neighbourhood strangled by gentrification.

02 The work

A meeting place is a symbol appointed by the people of a neighbourhood, for the belonging it holds, and for the values it passes on.

The development and the progress cities are going through leads to the death of those symbols, and of those values.

It is from that trigger that the project took the shape of a collective, practical action.

The installation lasted one month, and for that month people used it, from the local lads on their night-time wanderings to the older women stopping to rest on the way back from the usual afternoon shop.

After that, it was removed for legal reasons.

Please understand that this practice was never meant to be violent or vandalistic, but an act carried out by friends to make spaces of collectivity for themselves in a neighbourhood strangled by gentrification.

03 Process

I scheduled a series of workshops focused on the topic of informal making.

Friends helped me find the materials and build the table and the chairs. Everything was made in a collective way, without thinking about the final outcome, but just enjoying the process.

All the fabrication was done in my garage, with a saw, screws and a screwdriver.
