MDEFestival ’25

My first time designing installations for a festival: MDEFestival at the Elisava Grade Show 2025.

We dropped the usual show-your-project-on-a-table format and went for flags three metres tall. Each one carried illustrations, the project information, and a QR code leading into that student’s own website.

Three metres of printed cloth reads very differently from a poster: people walked between them rather than past them.

I coordinated the concept, the design and the fabrication of the flags, and of the wooden stands in particular. During the exhibition I also ran my first workshop on making: turning a beer can into a water filter, built on the technology I had tested in Disobedient Citizen.

Disobedient Citizen

An urban water-hacking journey, carried in a backpack and a trolley holding a multi-layered filter: fabric, cotton, sand, activated charcoal and gravel, bottom to top.

The idea was to get tap water up to the quality of bottled, using nothing but a filter you can build yourself. To test it I spent a full day walking Barcelona with the trolley, sampling fountains with an analogue kit and comparing them against the filtered water. Then I went up to Collserola and tested against the water from the hill. The filtered water came out closer to the hill’s than to the city’s.

My final first-year project, mixing digital fabrication, hands-on experimentation and carpentry. On hold now, but it set up my thesis.

Floating Analogic Social Media

An artifact that works as a vessel for dialogue: a symbolic intervention to raise awareness about a glacier disappearing, and about how tied that loss is to the people and places of the region.

Made of reclaimed wood and plastic bottles, designed to stay afloat and to carry a question. Paper and pens travel with it, so whoever finds it can leave an answer and, in time, answer the people who came before. A plastic flag works as both signal and sail.

A second critical and hands-on approach to design. My first research trip in the MDEF master, and an amazing moment to connect with other designers and minds.

SAVES ANIMAL

A DIY board game where the players have as much fun building it as playing it. A cardboard board, pieces made from bio-material, and a game that is fully cooperative rather than competitive.

Sometimes we think of a game only as a tool for having fun. This one asks to be made first.

Developed during the Elisava week workshop Hazardous Game, led by Tereza Ruller. A first critical and hands-on approach to design and digital fabrication, and I am proud to have had Tereza as a teacher: she gave me a lot of energy. It was also my first real time working in the IAAC workshop.

Molding waste

An experiment in making people think about their relationship with waste, through a process built on upcycling for a restorative environment.

Working in a place with a lot of discarded glass and plastic packaging, I made objects for the refreshment table: a glass, a base and an ashtray. The whole process is designed to be replicable and open, so anyone who wants to try it can.

Developed at Back Bo by Dumbo. This was my thesis project and the first hands-on piece I built entirely by myself. It went on to appear at Portici Vision lounge bar night and at Marenére Fest.

4Risograph

Developed at Blocco Comune, inside Dumbo Bologna, with Gabriel Cazzola and the Profilo22 collective. A work table for the Tatanka atelier, which had just won a European competition and taken delivery of a risograph printer.

4Risograph is a steel skeleton with a wooden top, built for the versatile, comfortable use of that machine: one table and three interchangeable modules.

I worked on the concept and on the hands-on adjustments, and it was here I understood I wanted to get further into carpentry, into knowing how to build objects. We also ran a workshop open to the public for painting and coating the wood and steel.
